The imagery of the Lord of the Rings confirms what Reformed Tradition has long affirmed: true Christians cannot totally or finally fall away from grace, but will certainly persevere in their journey of faith until the end.

In the words of Frodo, “ I will take The Ring to Mordor, though I don’t know the way.” I recently re-watched the movies, and encourage you to do so as well. After all, a dominant theme used in the New Testament to describe a life of following Jesus is that it is a journey which we must walk.

That gamble was nowhere near as successful, but the films as a whole have become a classic franchise with a TV show in the works as a revival. A decade later, Peter Jackson undertook The Hobbit, a prequel to the trilogy. Needless to say, it was quite a high stakes gamble even by Hollywood standards. This, in turn, led to a series of animated film adaptations during the 70s that weren’t well-received, leading these books to fall by the wayside once more. Published between 19, The Lord of the Rings trilogy is considered to be one of the best literary and fantasy book series of all time (though the former is debated by many scholars). The trilogy didn’t get much attention until the 60s when the Hippie culture embraced them.
